Brogdon Remains atop Bananas Market’s NBA Sixth Player of the Year Odds

Brogdon Remains atop Bananas Market's NBA Sixth Player of the Year Odds

The betting lines for Sixth Man of the Year in 2022–23 have been all over the place, but one player who has consistently remained at the top is Malcolm Brogdon.

Despite the market’s initial concern, Russell Westbrook was demoted to a bench role and eventually became a betting favorite after months of filling up the box score from the bench.

Westbrook was available on the buyout market and eventually signed with the Clippers, where he is currently starting.

As a result, Westbrook’s name has dropped significantly in the NBA odds to award the league’s best bench player.

And just when Malcolm Brogdon was looking to offer the same market stability to Boston’s bench as he had, Immanuel Quickley violently upended him.

However, that trend has died down quickly, making Brogdon the clear frontrunner again. A look at the current odds to be named Sixth Man of the Year.

Favorite to win NBA’s Best Sixth Player

Malcolm Brogdon (-150)

After their Finals loss, the Celtics urgently needed a playmaker and secondary scorer, so they went out and got Brogdon in the offseason, thus solving both problems at once.

In spite of an inconsistent start to the year, Brogdon has been an integral part of Boston’s top-tier regular season, helping to strengthen an attack that is currently third in the league. Brogdon’s importance has been magnified since the Celtics’ backcourt has recently suffered ailments.

Brogdon’s health is a major concern because he has lost significant time during four of the past six seasons. However, he is in a less taxing role this season and is on track to have his healthiest season since his rookie year despite having played in 61 games already.

Immanuel Quickley (+120)

With a torrid stretch contributing to the Knicks’ recent surge in the East standings, Immanuel Quickely rose in a market without much of a favorite or consensus this season from a +2,200 price tag a few weeks ago.

Quickley’s career best of 38 points in a recent double-overtime victory over Boston is indicative of his current form (ironically in a spot-start). As a result of the confidence inspired by his recent successes, his numbers should continue to improve in 2023.

Analyzing the NBA’s odds for the Sixth Man of the Year

The odds displayed by most bookmakers will be in the American format described above. As an illustration, let’s look at the voting for Rookie of the Year in 2019-2020:

Ja Morant started the season as a heavy favorite. Hence the odds for him had a negative (-) symbol before the number:

Ja Morant -500

A bettor would need to risk $500 in order to earn $100. A plus (+) sign would precede the number for any other option with lower probabilities. At the beginning of the season, before a clear favorite has emerged, wagering lines will look like this:

Zion Williamson +650

In this case, for every $100 gambled, the possible return is $650.

It should be noted that the Sixth Man Award has recently developed a hatred towards huge men. Check out our NBA betting guides to learn more. After Antawn Jamison won in 2003–04 while playing out of position as a small forward for the Dallas Mavericks, only two players who are not guards have won the award (Lamar Odom in 2011 and Montrezl Harrell in 2020).

NBA 6MOY betting trends

While placing your bets on the NBA’s Sixth Player of the Year, keep the following patterns in mind:

  • In the last decade, guards have dominated this category, taking home 6MOY nine times in that time.
  • Only Montrezl Harrell (2020), Roy Tarpley (1988), and Bill Walton (1986) at the center have ever been named 6MOY.
  • Recent three-time victors Jamal Crawford (2010, 2014, 2016) and Lou Williams (2015, 2018, 2019) suggest that voter fatigue may be less of an issue in this market.
